This essay is will address the his traits, ways in which his work influenced people, the obstacles that he encountered and also how his artistic work inspirers people in todays artistic work. Francis was an impeccable composer during the 18th century, where he used to write songs relating to the hardships faced by the community in general.at the time, it was pretty hard for African-American composers to come on board because the competition was pretty stiff. His prowess therefore must have been exceptional since his work made him host a racially-integrated concert in the United States of America (Johns, 2006). Francis was the first African-American artist to have his music published on a sheet music and also led the Americans to ensemble concerts abroad hence helping mobilize the American musical genres. His musical prowess also culminated to the establishment of the popu lar promenade concert style to America. The promenade concert involved classical concerts that involved educational and children events. Adults were also authorized to attend as the concerts were made to enlighten people and entertain them with orchestra music. The promenade concerts also ensured that children and other aspiring musicians also got the opportunity to learn by watching experienced artists perform on stage. The promenade was also embraced in the United Kingdom (Caldwell et al, 1994). Francis Johnson traits Johnson was a hard-working artist whose efforts were depicted by the numerous records that he made. He made over 300 records whose message and entertaining qualities embraced thousands of his followers. Moreover, he travelled across European nations during active years where he could actually hold concerts and perform his tracks, which were considered fascinating by the huge chunk of his followers. Johnson portrayed admirable leadership qualities over his tenure as an artist. Fellow music composers also viewed him as the role model, whom they could consult in matters relating to their profession. He also established the promenade concerts, which acted as profound basis for upcoming artists since they could watch the proven artists perform live. He is actually rumored to have been the leader to the Philadelphian Matt Black band that established a remarkable musical basement in the country (McDermott, 1948). He portrayed courage and fearless traits as he started and carried on wi th his career under turmoil circumstances. Johnson, being an African-American found it pretty hard to establish himself as an artist. The Americans had predominated in the music industry and therefore one had to stand fearlessly with a lot of courage before his efforts got recognized.to prove his worth, he got his music published on the Music sheet, which was great achievement. Johnson therefore figured that music was actually his talent, hence devoted his life on the profession (Johnson, 2012). Johnson was also a proven teacher, who imparted knowledge to both black and white people. Being a versatile and established musician, Johnson gave back to the community as he taught music to the youths, both black and white. People saw him as an established figure whom they believed that his knowledge would actually create a difference as far as the music industry was concerned. He was extremely resilient towards any form of discrimination during his career. Johnson faced racial discri mination from the whites especially during concerts. Due to his resilience, Johnson never gave up but solely focused on winning the crowd.it didnt take long before the crowds realized how talented the black man was hence started loving his work. Ways in which Johnson work influenced people He contributed significantly to shun racial discrimination in the country. Through his musical concerts, Johnson enlightened people to embrace each other as they were all humans. He also taught blacks and whites musical lessons hence embracing all the races. Johnsons efforts to shun racial discrimination can also be depicted through his travel and performance on different countries without considering his color. Johnson laid the foundation for the musical artists not even locally but also internationally. He was the first black American to get his name on board as an exceptional artist, hence acting as a motivational foundation for black artists who had found it hard to break through the white-dominated industry. Through him, the blacks figured that they could also break into the industry and prove the worth. Johnson acted as a role model to small children, whom he taught as a teacher. For example he taught musical skills to the children, who treasured him as their role model. They dreamt of emulating his strategies and composing power. Todays jazz music artists owe Johnson a lot.it is believed that the jazz style of music was initiated by Johnson during his musical career. The genre was formulated by Johnson and his band hence creating the foundation for the future jazz music style, who found a readily established musical foundation (Taylor, 2005). Johnson also influenced people through his performance to the churches, hence motivating Christians through his educative music. For example he performed sacred music at the Philadelphia, New York and Boston black churches hence bring people together across the USA. He also influenced the life of military people as a music director.as an established artist, the military also sought his services in composing military songs. He also directed their performance through rehearsals and encouraging talks. Johnsons work was so outstanding that his music was also used in national functions for example his w ork new cottolions and March was performed for General La Fayette during his visit in the year 1824.this is a clear indication that Johnsons work was a thriller to the general world.it was such an honor to the American people to have an iconic artist whom foreigners people paid much attention to his work (Kang, 2008). Obstacles faced by Francis Johnson Although Francis Johnson had such a remarkable carrier as an artist, his career path also encountered hardships and turmoil. He was subjected to severe ethnic discrimination, which adversely affected his career path. The whites, who had literally dominated the industry viewed Johnson as an outcast.it was pretty hard for him to get on stage and perform as people hurled insults as he performed on stage. His career had also been deterred by the whites as they took much time before printing his music to the music sheet. Discrimination was such a demoralizing vice that some blacks could actually give up their ambitions. Even though Johnson remained resilient to the vice, it hugely affected his attitude and ambition. Its argued that racial discrimination was the greatest challenge that Johnson encountered as he tried to win over peoples confidence (Southern, 1973). He also encountered hardship as far as storing his musical work for future reference. Back in the days the global coun tries had not improved to a greater extent hence proving to be a stabling block to musical storage. The only available option was the manuscript which cannot actually be kept for a long time. His regrets must have been poor technological availabilities. Johnson lacked support from the local administration that would have helped him become a good artist on time. The local administration, especially the Philadelphian administration failed to support upcoming artists and instead let the locals support racism. He also lacked support from his family members.it was unfortunate Johnsons parents couldnt be traced hence making him lonely. Johnson also faced opposition from the white artists, who at the beginning felt that his music was not good enough.at his time of coming up, he met the whites who were absolutely disillusion and stereotypes that blacks were not in a position to make good music. They felt that only whites were in a position to compose good quality music hence no way th at the blacks music would be printed on the music sheet. The artist was also confronted with physical violence from a crowd where he had showed up for performance. The insulting crowd argued that he couldnt even read the music sheet and that he made music through his ears. Luckily, Johnson escaped partially hurt despite the government even ordering for his arrest.it was unfortunate that the people around him, including the local administration could not realize the much effort he had put forth in composing the beautiful music. However, the locals later realized that he was genuinely talented. How Johnsons artistic work inspires people in todays life Johnsons artistry is recommendable even in todays life because he is viewed as the Godfather of jazz music genre therefore he laid down the profound basis under which todays artists compose their music. Therefore todays artists look up to Johnsons footsteps. He is a good model to todays black artists who should embrace his resilience and devotion on their work. People should therefore not be intimidated on the grounds of color, origin or any other physical appearance. Johnsons artistic work is true reflection for the love of mankind. Its therefore import for people to treat others the way theyd love to be treated for the world to be a better place. He actually taught students from different ethnic background hence portraying a good picture to the society. People need to emulate his character and embrace fellow mankind for a better society. In conclusion, Francis Johnson proved his heroic characters because the background was not promising for any back artistic to fight and prove his worth in the artistic profession. He went through turbulent experience such as the racial abuse, physical attacks, and lack of support from the administration and the unsupportive society. However through hard work and resilience, he became an astounding artist whose music united people and restored love and unity amongst the people. He laid a profound legacy that people should emulate for a better world. Reference Jones, C.K., 2006.? Book report The Restraint of Beasts by Magnus Mills Essay Example For Students

Book report: The Restraint of Beasts by Magnus Mills Essay The I-person in the book is being put in charge of Tam and Ritchie, two fencers, just like him. He is to be their foreman because they need to be restraint in some way, when going to England for a job (the base of operation is in Scotland). Tam and Ritchie are always together and they are both not very hard workers. When the narrator is promoted as foreman of Tam and Ritchie, the two are halfway through a job at Mr. McCrindles farm. The narrators foreman duties start there. When Tams tightening a final wire, something accidentally goes wrong and a tool ends up hitting Mr. McCrindles head. It was an accident, they say, and then bury him. Even though theyre employer is no more, they finish the fence. Their next job is in England with Mr. Perkins. During the day Tam and Ritchie build the fences according to their boss, Donald, and Mr Perkins wishes. However, in the evening they go to the local pub: the Queens Head. Here they drink as much beer as their money will allow them to and this is about all they do. They hardly engage contact with anyone else. To their own surprise Tam and Ritchie are asked to build a fence for and by a Mr. Hall. To this they agree, even though theyre still busy building Mr Perkins fence. Mr. Perkins on his turn finds out that his fence is not the only one being built. The moment he catches them he is accidentally killed by Ritchie. He was throwing posts over a hedge, and one of them had hit Mr. Perkins at the back of his head. It was an accident and they bury him, but, again, they do finish the fence. They all finish Mr Halls fence as well (but not in time, which doesnt please Mr Hall), and are asked to build him pens. They agree to this, but they do not finish this job. Instead, they go back to Scotland. When they arrive in Scotland they stay there for a week or so before they have to go back to England on a new job for a certain Mr. Hall. Obviously, the trio doesnt like this situation, since they left him with an unfinished job last time. After being there for a short while they find out Mr Hall knows about the dead people they left everywhere. Setting: time and place Its situated in Scotland and England. It starts in Scotland, but after a couple of pages the trio (Tam, Ritchie and the narrator) moves to England, to a town called Upper Bowland to do the job at Mr Perkins farm. Im putting you in charge of Tam and Ritchie, said Donald. They cant go to England on their own. (p. 1) From this quote its quite obvious theyre going to England. The next one illustrates they were in Scotland: Sometime later we passed the sign welcoming you to Scotland if you were coming the other way. (p. 52) On the time in which it takes place I can say this: on page forty-three Jock, the bartender, asks Tam if theyll be back by Christmas, this is after Mr. McCrindles death and burial. On page 166 its Christmas Eve, and they go back to England for the second time after New Years. So the time span runs from a bit before Christmas till some time after New Year. Title explanation The Restraint of Beasts is the title used. This refers to two things: The book is about building fences. Fences are used for a certain purpose, keeping in beasts. Making sure they dont go and wander about any further than the owner wants them to. In other words, restraining them. Hence, The Restraint of Beasts. As Mr. McCrindle had demonstrated by his phone all, the main concern of farmers was that their fences should be tight. Without this the restraint of beasts was impossible. Essay The second meaning of the title is the following one: Tam and Ritchie have very similar behaviour compared to cattle and in my opinion particularly to cows. Meaning they do their purpose, but they are slow. You can sort of tell them what to do and where to go, but they dont listen very well. Since cows are regarded beasts, Tam and Ritchie are, in a way, beasts. The narrator is made foreman, so he can be seen as the restraint. This results as The Restraint of Beasts. They are also restrained by going to the pub. I looked at Tam and Richies faces and wondered if Donald realized the consequences of his actions. By not sending wages he was more or less pulling the plug on those two. I knew from my time with them that they could only work in the day if they had beer to look forward to at night. (p. 208 209) Ending The book ends very abruptly in Mr Halls office. The last sentences are the following: Mr Hall sat silently regarding us across his desk. The only sound was the endless churning of the sausage machine, somewhere in the depths of factory. My chair had begun to feel very uncomfortable. What people? I asked. Well, he said. Lets starts with Mr. McCrindle. (p. 215) Its very peculiar that Mr. Hall knows about Mr. McCrindle. The two men are in no way connected to one another. The only way Mr. Hall might know about Mr. McCrindle is through Donald. The preceding days were peculiar as well. The Hall brothers are very weird about their sausages, about the trio going out to the pub after six oclock and about having women on the premises. Im not sure of the meaning of this ending, and Im not sure about what the Hall Brothers really are. What might have happened is that Donald found out about the death of Mr. McCrindle and Mr. Perkins and therefore arranged that Mr. Hall would dispose of Tam, Ritchie and the narrator by putting them into sausages, and make them disappear. Then again, maybe the Hall Brothers are just psychopaths and eat people. This might explain the high fences they need. It could be to keep people from escaping. If a fence is high and hooked up to a transformer, it would certainly make it harder for people to escape. Point of view This book is written in the first person. The narrators name isnt mentioned in the book at all. We only know a couple of things about him: Hes English Hes male Hes the foreman. Donald made him foreman on page one of the novel. During the novel he becomes more careless and easier, more like Tam and Ritchie: Ritchie found his cigarettes in a dry place beneath his waterproof, and squeezed into his soaking jeans for the lighter. I realized for the first time that I no longer found the ritual irritating. (p. 174) Theme I found it quite hard to discover a theme because theres no real message. We cant really learn anything from this book except for one thing: how to build a fence. We learn quite a lot about building fences, possibly even all there is to learn. Magnus Mills uses the book to describe what was once his own job, building fences. He describes the tools, but also uses a certain form of repetition to make us realize building fences (which is basically what the whole book is about), is a very monotonous and repetitive process. The following quotes will illustrate my point: There were hole-digging implements, wire-tightening gear, a rusty steel spike (blunt), a selection of chisels and a chain winch. (p. 6) Tam looked at Mr McCrindle and then turned to me. I didnt mean to do that, he said. I know you didnt, I replied. (p. 33) He was dead, wasnt he? Im sure he was, said Ritchie. What about his cows? .u6c41c9bb18bbed3b2a93e58d701f9481 , .u6c41c9bb18bbed3b2a93e58d701f9481 .postImageUrl , .u6c41c9bb18bbed3b2a93e58d701f9481 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u6c41c9bb18bbed3b2a93e58d701f9481 , .u6c41c9bb18bbed3b2a93e58d701f9481:hover , .u6c41c9bb18bbed3b2a93e58d701f9481:visited , .u6c41c9bb18bbed3b2a93e58d701f9481:active { border:0!important; } .u6c41c9bb18bbed3b2a93e58d701f9481 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u6c41c9bb18bbed3b2a93e58d701f9481 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u6c41c9bb18bbed3b2a93e58d701f9481:active , .u6c41c9bb18bbed3b2a93e58d701f9481:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u6c41c9bb18bbed3b2a93e58d701f9481 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u6c41c9bb18bbed3b2a93e58d701f9481 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u6c41c9bb18bbed3b2a93e58d701f9481 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u6c41c9bb18bbed3b2a93e58d701f9481 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u6c41c9bb18bbed3b2a93e58d701f9481:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u6c41c9bb18bbed3b2a93e58d701f9481 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u6c41c9bb18bbed3b2a93e58d701f9481 .u6c41c9bb18bbed3b2a93e58d701f9481-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u6c41c9bb18bbed3b2a93e58d701f9481:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Anton Chekhov - The Beggar Commentary EssayTheyll be alright. Biography of Bill Clinton, the 42nd U.S. President

Biography of Bill Clinton, the 42nd U.S. President Bill Clinton was born on August 19, 1946 in Hope, Arkansas, as William Jefferson Blythe III. His father was a traveling salesman who died in a car accident three months before he was born. His mother remarried when he was four to Roger Clinton. He took the Clinton name in high school. At the time, he was also an excellent student and an accomplished saxophonist. Clinton became ignited to a political career after visiting the Kennedy White House as a Boys Nation delegate. He went on to be a Rhodes Scholar to Oxford University. Family and Early Life Clinton was the son of William Jefferson Blythe, Jr., a traveling Salesman and  Virginia Dell Cassidy, a nurse. His father was killed in an automobile accident just three months before Clinton was born. His mother married  Roger Clinton in 1950. He owned an automobile dealership. Bill would legally change his last name to Clinton in 1962. He had one half-brother, Roger Jr., who Clinton pardoned for earlier crimes during his last days in office. In 1974, Clinton was a first year law professor and ran for the House of Representatives. He was  defeated but remained undaunted and ran for Attorney General of Arkansas unopposed in 1976. He went on to run for Governor of Arkansas in 1978 and won becoming the youngest governor of the state. He was defeated in the 1980 election but returned to office in 1982. Over the next decade in office he established himself as a New Democrat that could appeal to both Republicans and Democrats. Becoming the President In 1992, William Jefferson Clinton was nominated as the Democratic nominee for president. He ran on a campaign that emphasized job creation and played to the idea that he was more in touch with the common people than his opponent, the incumbent George H. W. Bush. Actually, his bid for the presidency was helped by a three party race in which Ross Perot garnered 18.9% of the vote. Bill Clinton won 43% of the vote, and President Bush won 37% of the vote. Events and Accomplishments of Bill Clinton’s Presidency An important protective bill that passed in 1993 soon after taking office was the Family and Medical Leave Act. This act required large employers to give employees time off for illnesses or pregnancy. Another event that occurred in 1993 was the ratification of the North American Free Trade Agreement that allowed for non-restricted trade between Canada, the U.S., Chile, and Mexico. A huge defeat for Clinton was when his and  Hillary Clintons plan for a national health care system  failed. Clintons second term in office was marked by controversy surrounding relationships he had with White House staffer,  Monica Lewinsky. Clinton denied having a relationship with her under oath in a deposition. However, he later recanted when it was revealed that she had evidence of their relationship. He had to pay a fine and was disbarred temporarily. In 1998, the  House of Representatives  voted to impeach Clinton. The Senate, however, did not vote to remove him from office. Economically, the U.S. experienced a period of prosperity during Clintons time in office. The  stock market  rose dramatically. This helped add to his popularity. Post-Presidential Period Upon leaving office President Clinton entered the public speaking circuit. He also remains active in contemporary politics by calling for multilateral solutions to issues facing the world. Clinton has also started working with former rival President George H.W. Bush on several humanitarian endeavors. He also assists his wife in her political aspirations as a Senator from New York. Historical Significance Clinton was the first two term Democratic president since Franklin Roosevelt. In a period of increasingly divided politics, Clinton moved his policies more to the center to appeal to mainstream America. Despite being impeached, he remained a very popular President.

Rhetoric Analysis of a Music News Website Essay

Rhetoric Analysis of a Music News Website - Essay Example In order to understand why this target audience continues such criminal activity, their assumptions about the record industry must be examined. Music United is one website that analyzes and addresses these assumptions. A coalition group of many different organizations committed against online music piracy, Music United strives not only to disprove college students' assumptions about the record industry, but also to persuade college students to abide by the law when obtaining music. In order to accomplish these goals, the Music United site utilizes textual and technical features to establish a direct communication with its targeted audience of college students. These features are functions of appeals to guilt, fear, empathy, and the law that are embedded within the content and the purpose of the site. College students view the internet as a place of public freedom, where people can come and go, sharing their ideas, pictures, and pages along the way. A basic knowledge of web designing is all that is needed to post material on the internet for the world to see. Over time, users view the internet as a "marketplace" where everyone is entitled to every page, picture, and idea posted. College students adopt this kind of public-sharing sentiment when they download mp3s without paying. ... ree for the taking in much the same way reading a newspaper article online is free (as opposed to paying $0.50 to read the same article on a hard copy). Music United disagrees with this "free for all" spirit of college students who participate in the sharing and downloading of illegal mp3 files. Not everything on the internet is for free, certainly not music. This is one of the college students' assumptions the site refutes. Music United accomplishes this goal through the use specially designed text-graphics, which appeal to guilt and fear. The home page provides an example of these text-graphics. Although they may look like regular text, these special headers and key quotations are actual graphics (clicking on them reveals they are gif files) that were most likely created in some photo editing program like Paint Shop Pro. The combination of red and white colors functions the same way a "stop" sign functions: it awakens the senses by signaling a warning. When college students see this graphic, the colors indicate that something of greater importance is being said here, as opposed to the regular black-colored text found throughout the site. The colors catch their eyes, compelling them to read the text. The font type is different and larger from the standard Verdana text found throughout the site, further emphasizing the importance of the message. The capitalization of the number ("2.6 million") and the cr ime ("illegally downloaded") not only stresses the importance of the text, but also accentuates the guilt the phrases elicit from its audience. When college students who engage in illegal mp3 trading read the text, they are struck with guilt. They immediately identify themselves as illegal downloader's who partake in the distribution of those 2.6 billion files each

Influence of Christianity on Literature

Influence of Christianity on Literature Introduction Christianity and Islam are daughter religions of Judaism. They were established as splinter groups from Judaism at different times in the history of the Jews. On its part, Judaism is a very old religion which traces its origin from the Old Testament times of Abraham and Moses. In fact, all of its doctrines revolve around the Mosaic Law. These are sets of rules/commandments which were given to Moses by God (Yahweh) in Mount Sinai. It happened at a time when he was called by God to go back to Egypt and deliver His people (the Israelites) from the yoke of oppression from the ruthless Pharaoh. This followed the enslavement of the Israelites that lasted for over 400 years until they were eventually delivered by Moses. Later, Judaism became the official religion amongst the Jews[1]. On the other hand, Christianity is a religion which is based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. As recorded in the Synoptic Gospels in the Holy Bible, Jesus was born of Virgin Mary and Joseph[2]. Despite growing in strict Jewish traditions, He later directly criticized the actions of the Pharisees, Scribes and Sadducees who had been imposing stringent laws on the people. Thus, He advocated for transition into a new order which later turned to be Christianity especially after His death. This came as a result of the efforts of the early apostles under the leadership of St. Peter. All these were done because of the teachings of Jesus Christ who had been appealing to His followers to accept to repent their sins and accept the good news[3]. The good news was about the promise of eternal life which would accrue to anyone who would accept Him as their personal savior. In other words, Christianity is a new religion which split from Judaism and is based on the teachings of Jesus Himself. This clearly demonstrates that it is a daughter religion of Judaism. After all, it also reveres the Old Testament as a holy book. To the Judaists, Old Testament is the most important holy book used in advancing their teachings and doctrines. Meanwhile, Islam is also another religion which is also believed to have split from Judaism. It was the last religion which traces its origin to Judaism. It was founded by Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be upon Him) who lived a lot of years after the death of Jesus Christ. Unlike the rest of the religions, Islam came into existence after the interactions of Prophet Mohamed (PBUH). Meaning, it borrowed a lot of doctrines from Judaism and Christianity which were already established at the time it was founded. According to Islamic historians, Prophet Mohamed (PBUH) was the last and most important prophet amongst the Muslims. To the Muslims, Quran is the only Holy Book which should be used in the worship of Allah (the only God to be worshipped). However, the Quran is often used along side the hadith which contains the speeches about Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). Why Christianity Dominates Literature As a matter of fact, Christianity, Islam and Judaism are some of the most prominent classical religions in the contemporary society[4]. According to the latest statistics, there are a total of 2.9 billion Christians in the world today. This is nearly a third of the world’s population. Meaning, it is the only religion with the highest number of followers globally. For Christianity to reach where it is today, it has actually had a very long history. This began at the time of Jesus who initially faced too much opposition from conservative Jewish sects such as the Pharisees. Because of their different world views, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law made it so hard to for Jesus to spread the gospel to His followers. Even after triumphantly defeating death, it was not easier for the early Church apostles to advance Jesus’ teachings and spread the good news to all the corners of the world as He had commanded them[5]. Thus, it means that Christianity has managed to dominate literary texts depicting its mother and sister religions due to the fact that it has had a lot of committed people who dedicated their life to serve humanity and make remarkable contributions to people’s lives. If it were not for their efforts, it might not be much easier for the authors, early church fathers, philosophers and theologians to write about. This might be attributed to the numerous extra-ordinary activities which they performed[6]. As already highlighted, amongst these people is Jesus Christ. It is a common knowledge to all Christians that Jesus is the most important figure in this religion. Had it not been for Him, Christianity would not have existed. This is because He managed to gather large multitudes and performed numerous miracles which many people, especially His critics could not believe. Therefore, because He had lots of stories to be written, several books have been published provide people with all these information. They are very important since they act as evidence for the great works that He did as He was battling the dominance of the Pharisees who had taken control of the Jewish community for a very long time. Unlike Jesus, these Pharisees were so conservative and had made life to be too challenging to the ordinary Jews who needed to be saved from such oppression. Right from His birth, Jesus Christ had a very complicated history. First, His birth had been prophesied by several prophets such as Jeremiah and Isaiah. God had planned that He would be born of a Virgin Mary (who still remained virgin even after His birth). Besides, His birth took place in the historical town of Bethlehem in a very unusual place[7]. Later, He made lots of contributions towards the development of Christianity. These include a series of sermons that He delivered in different laces which He traversed during His entire period of the ministry[8]. As a universal figure, He did not only concentrate in Israel, but even preached to the gentiles. This demonstrates that He had not only come for the Jews, but also for other people especially the sinners who needed to repent and accept to live according to the word of God. Therefore, these teachings are some of the most popular works which have been published by several scholars. In fact, the manner in which He exhaustively used the parables during His sermons made Him to be classified as the greatest and best teacher in the world. Everyone wanted to publish a book to record His works. A part from recoding the preaching of Jesus, many scholars have been interested in writing books about the miracles that He had performed. As already highlighted, Jesus Christ performed some of the greatest miracles in the history of man. Here, He cured the sick, fed the hungry and raised the dead. Each of these is of a great importance to His followers. They proved that He was actually concerned about the welfare of His followers especially the poor, malnourished and the less fortunate in the society. For instance, by curing the lepers and those possessed by demons, Jesus demonstrated that He could liberate individuals from their agonies. This was particularly seen when He cured those who had been sick and abandoned for several decades. Therefore, inmost of the writings, all these information is captured. This has been evidenced even in the literary works which discuss about Judaism, Christianity and Islam. A part from Jesus Christ, the other important figure amongst the Christians is Virgin Mary. Of course, Mother Mary is a revered figure amongst the Christians, Judaists and the Muslims. The stories of Mary have been extensively covered in several books[9]. This is because she is believed to be holding a very important position both in Christianity, Judaism and Islam. For the Judaists, Mary is the mother of Jesus. It is through her that the Jews got a messiah who had been promised to them since the time of Isaiah and Jeremiah. For a very long time, the Jewish society had been waiting for a messiah who was to come and save them from their oppressors. Thus, Mary plays a very integral role in Judaism. If it were not her, Jesus would not have been born. The same applies to the Muslims who also believe in Jesus. However, unlike Christians, they hold that Jesus was not God, but a prophet just like others like Mohamed, Isaiah and Obadiah. Therefore, Mary is also revered by them as she is accredited with the bearing of Jesus. On the other hand, Mary holds a central position in the church. To the Christians, it is Virgin Mary who gave birth to Jesus Christ, a messiah who had been promised to them by God. Therefore, by being the mother of Jesus, Mary is undoubtedly the mother of God. Thus, she is the mother of the church. For this reason, the information about Mother Mary has been disseminated by several writers. This is what has been evidenced in the stories such as The Tales of Count Lucanor and Miracles of Our Lady which are amongst the earliest books written to give accounts of some of the most memorable miracles performed by the Virgin Mary in the history of the Christian Church. In the Miracles of Our Lady, Gonzalo de Berceo gives a clear presentation about the miracles of Virgin Mary which she had performed to her followers. However, this is given from the perspective of Christianity. As it is recorded in the collections, Virgin Mary had used her powers as the mother of God to perform different types of miracles that she used to reward her faithful and obedient followers. At the same time, she performed some miracles in order to punish those who did not follow her ways, but opted to be subversive in their actions. Therefore, they had to be punished by Mary so as to act as examples and make them conduct themselves in line with Christian teachings. However, most of these teachings are highly held by the Christians. In Miracle Three: Cleric and the Flower, Virgin Mary performed a very extra-ordinary action which amazed everyone. It was an example of how she, as a Mother of the Church, could use her divine powers to perform miracles to demonstrate that it is a worthy thing for a person to live as per the word of God. In this miracle, there was a cleric who was a very righteous man of God. He always lived according to the teachings of the Bible. As a clergy, he was doing all the good things which are accepted by God. During that time, it was a tradition to accord Christians a decent burial. A person in his stature would be buried in a Christian cemetery which was specially designed to burry staunch followers like him. However, when he died, no one bothered to burry him as per the traditions. Instead, he was jealously buried in isolation. Based on his relationships with Mother Mary, she ordered that the man be buried in the designated Christian cemetery. Therefore, when he was to be exhumed, everyo ne was amazed to find out that the dead man was not rotten, but producing attractive and pleasant flowery smell. Hence, Mother Mary performed this miracle to reward the clergy for his dedicated services during his lifetime[10]. In miracle 16: The Little Jewish Boy, Mother Mary also performed a miracle which was classified as a reward for righteousness. In Bourges, there was a great division between the Jews and Christians. The members of the two religions were hostile to one another. In fact, this is similar to the situation that existed during the time of the early church in which the early church apostles were surprised by the Jews and Roman authorities. However, in this case, the little Jewish boy whose parents were strict Judaists got an opportunity to play with Christian and join them in a church service in which he saw, admired, liked and fell in love with the Mother Mary. Later, when he went back to his family and informed his father about it, he was infuriated. Therefore, he threw the boy into a raging fire. Surprisingly, the little boy was not harmed at all. When he came out, he attributed his escape to Mother Mary whom he had seen her image on the church wall. This miracle can also be used to just ify why Mother Mary is too popular amongst the Christians. Judaism, Christianity and Islam are related in many ways. A part from sharing similar history, they have a lot of common beliefs and doctrines. These include the belief in God and prominent historical figures such as Jesus and Mary[11]. Today, they still remain as the most popular classical religions in the society. However, Christianity still stands out very strongly. This is evidenced in the manner it dominates literary work in which all of these religions are included. This might be attributed to the fact that it has lots of significant people who constitute its long, turbulent and expansive history. For instance, in The Tales of Count Lucanor and Miracles of Our Lady, a lot of stories are presented about Virgin Mary who used her powers to perform lots of miracles to the Christian believers[12]. Even if Mary is accepted by all these religions, she holds a very important position in the Christian Church. In a publication like Miracles of Our Lady, it has to prominently feature about Christianity. It has to appeal most to the Christians because they are the ones who have placed Mother Mary in the highest status as compared to the Muslims and Judaists. To the Muslims, Jesus was not a central figure in the foundation of their religion. He was just a prophet like any other. Hence, it implies that Virgin Mary could be like an ordinary human being who gave birth to a prophet of Allah. Hence, she can not be more important than other mothers who gave birth to other prophets. Although slightly different, in Judaism, Virgin Mary was the mother of Jesus who came to liberate the Jews from their (political) oppression. He did not found their religion. However, this is much different from Christians who believe in Jesus as a messiah whose teachings should strictly complied with. Hence, Mother Mary becomes the mother of messiah who readily offered His life as a ransom to save humanity from their si ns. And because Jesus was God, Mother Mary obviously becomes the mother of God. Further more, since Jesus is embodied in the Church, Mother Mary too becomes the mother of the church[13]. This explains why she is still adored as the central focus of the church through whom the believers can receive blessings and salvation. She is more important to Christians than to any other religion. The complexity of law fascinates me. Law has changed throughout time and continues to vastly affect our everyday lives, whether we grasp it or not. We live in a world of very diverse cultures and backgrounds in which I am greatly intrigued by how law moves amongst. As I have realised this, my keenness to study the subject has grown. I wish to learn in depth, the structures, ways and reasons in which these are enforced throughout the different modules. Studying Economics at A-Level has developed my essay writing skills so I am able to argue by analysing and evaluating relevant points in a topic. It has also enlightened me with certain effects of law and decisions made by the government and businesses on civilisation, whereas from ICT I have developed a solid understanding of an area which is playing an increasingly important role in today's society around the world. Textiles has not just acknowledged me on the making process of garments, it has given me the business understanding of finance and advertisement aspects of it. Housing & Development Board Analysis Essay

This is the highest rate of increase this year compared to the 0. 1-per cent drop in the first quarter and the 0. 4-per cent increase in the second quarter. It was also higher than the flash estimate of 0. 5 per cent released earlier this month. Meanwhile, resale prices of Housing & Development Board (HDB) flats in Singapore hit a record high. HDB’s Resale Price Index (RPI) rose from 194 in the second quarter of this year to 197. 9 in the third quarter. This represents an increase of two per cent over the previous quarter, the same as that of the flash estimate released on October 1. – Evidence for an increase demand for resale flats  But with a bumper crop of 27,000 Build-to-Order flats being rolled out this year, analysts said the resale market may be showing signs of moderating. Growth for the first three-quarters of this year is 3. 9 per cent. This is lower than the annual RPI growth of 14. 1 per cent in 2010, and 10. 7 per cent last year. Donald Han, special advisor at HSR Property Consultants, said: â€Å"Buyers who are able to wait for the product to be completed in 24 to 36 months are getting better value proposition in terms of cheaper prices, and perhaps better amenities compared to one who’s buying a resale flat. The volume of resale transactions also fell for the first time in 12 months. Resale transactions also fell by about six per cent from 7,011 cases in second quarter to 6,560 cases in the third. – Number of buyers dropped The last fall in resale transactions was in the third quarter of last year when transactions fell from 6,581 in the second quarter, to 5,903 in the third. Analysts said that this might not be because buyers are staying away, but because there is a short supply of resale flats in the market. – Reason for the decrease in the demand (Isnt this is for supply? The number of sellers in market. ) They added that this has pushed the median cash-over-valuation (COV) up by S$4,000 to S$5,000 compared to the last quarter. According to real estate firm Propnex, COVs hovered between S$25,000 and $28,000 in the first two quarters, before rising to $30,000 in Q3. This means a 20 per cent increase quarter-on-quarter. Chris Koh, director of Chris International, said: â€Å"Regardless of whether there are BTO flats, if private property prices are too high, many are unable to afford private property. So they turn to a resale market to buy a flat instead. So you still see a strong demand from those not eligible to buy brand new flats, those who can’t afford private property and have to buy a resale flat. – Reason for the increase in the demand. (Price of related good) â€Å"There’s one more group, I call them the ‘downgraders’. They have cashed out their private property, that’s why they don’t mind paying a premium for some of these resale flats. † In the rental market, subletting transactions rose by about four per cent. The number of cases increased from 6,891 in the second quarter to 7,142 cases in the third quarter. The total number of HDB flats approved for subletting also rose to 42,920 units in the third quarter, compared to 41,814 units in the second. Mr Han said: â€Å"In the last five years, prices have not gone south. In fact, prices have grown by 92 to 93 per cent since five years ago†¦ So, a lot of the able sellers are keeping it for hopefully higher capital returns for the next 12 months. (supply) If you look into a rental proposition, HDB rental flats – if you look at average four-room or five-room, you’re looking at roughly about S$2,000 to S$2,500 per month. It provides a very good fertile ground support for tenants out in the market looking for cheap accommodation. â€Å"The yield coming from HDB apartments is fairly attractive as well, compared to other classes of residential property. We’re looking at yields of 4. 5 to five per cent, compared to private properties which would be about 2. 5 to about 3. 5 per cent. â€Å" Mr Koh added: â€Å"I’m not sure if there’s a co-relation, but I won’t deny that if prices of resale flats are too high, some would not be able to afford it. So the next best option will be to rent and wait for prices to come down. â€Å"- Reason for decrease in demand when price rise. (Taste and preference? ) The HDB said it introduced a new e-service on Monday to enable the public to search for the market rentals of entire HDB flats rented out by owners. It is hoped that this will allow better transparency in the subletting market, and help potential tenants and flat owners make informed decisions.

The earliest forms of civilizations were said to be located on the three river valleys of the Tigris-Euphrates River in ancient Mesopotamia, the Nile River in ancient Egypt and the Huang He and Indus River in ancient India and China. These three river valley civilizations had many differences yet still lived common life styles. Although the civilizations are located on different continents, they share similar social, political, and economic beliefs from their intellectual developments to types of government to religious beliefs and trading systems. When the civilizations were first invented, there was a lot of chaos and confusion. This led to the invention of the different forms of writing. Each civilization had a form of writing for their people. However, only a minority of the people were literate. However, this minute problem didn’t stop the civilizations from wanting to further advance themselves in life; the complex skills were left to those who had time to mas ter it. The Mesopotamians were the first to invent their own style of writing called Cuneiform. The Cuneiform used different pictures to represent various objects but soon shifted to the use of geometric shapes to symbolize spoken sound. The Egyptians were the first to invent the numbering system through a style called hieroglyphics. Their knowledge in math was able to define the twenty-four hour time period in a day and they influenced the development of later Mediterranean cultures. The Phoenicians then came along and shortened the alphabet with twenty-two letters and better the Egyptian numbering system. On the other hand, the Indians and Chinese were big advocates for science. They had remarkable achievements in astronomy which led to the creation of the calendar in which we still use today. They also had remarkable achievements in bronze work which helped create many tools used for farming and agriculture. Each intellectual development throughout the three civilizations h as contributed to better the civilizations at that time period and is still used modern day. With better intellect and further developing societies, the need for government came into play. All three of the major river civilizations had a government in the form of hierarchy. Each civilization had a ruler; they were in a monarchy system. Some of the systems were considered to be well off systems because they were able to rule without any disruptions while others had systems in which were not in equality with men and women. In Mesopotamia, there was a king who ruled city-state regions. The kings were war leaders and their main function was to make sure everything was running great in their region. On the other hand, the Egyptians, Indians, and Chinese had similar monarchy systems. Their rulers were Pharaohs and kings, however in their society, people were slaves. The Pharaoh was such an elite person that they needed people in their society (slaves) to build pyramids and elaborate palaces for them. With each civilization having a distinct leader, this helped keep the environment more stable although some civilizations weren’t fair in the distribution of power. As time was progressing, the civilizations have been developing techniques to better their ways of life. All three civilizations were accustomed to trade because they were located near rivers. Although they had access to the water surrounding their civilization, not all the civilizations traded with one another. Each of the civilizations was farmers but they had different ways to go about farming their lands. The Mesopotamians invented the wheel, which was used to transport both people ad goods and also to make pottered pots. While on the other hand, the Chinese was able to do overland trading with India and the Middle East. With opening up to the outside world, each civilization was able to develop new ideas from other civilizations and help make their life better in their community. In C onclusion, the first civilizations were the ones located at the major river valleys. These civilizations had different styles but lived similar lives I their individual civilizations.
